I’m unsure about so many things right now but if there is one thing I’m certain of it’s PORTUGAL🇵🇹

I have been living in Portugal since 2016 but it was only over the last year I realised I had made the right decision to move here. I began falling for it quicker than ever before.

It hasn’t been an easy ride but I finally feel like I truly belong here, more than any other place on earth (including my birth country).

Portugal is the underdog (but it shouldn’t be) and for that I love it even more. The more I learn about the country the more I crave to be closer to it.

Whether I choose to live in Cascais, Lagos, Porto or a tiny village (you probably haven’t heard of) deep in the Alentejo it doesn’t matter, because all of Portugal feels like my home ❤️🇵🇹

Home isn’t a place, it’s a feeling.

Tomorrow I was supposed to be moving back to Algarve. I planned the move 2 months ago and until last week it was a sure thing.

At the beginning of 2021 I asked the universe to help me decide whether to stay in Cascais or go back to Algarve.

I should have asked more carefully because the universe’s version of a ‘sign’ was 2 months of hospital visits and an upcoming surgery🤦🏼‍♀️

While it wasn’t the sign I was looking for it has helped me realise the importance Cascais has played in my growth over the last 6 months.

My heart is completely split down the middle between Lagos and Cascais and right now it feels like an impossible decision to make.

Once my surgery is done I have the freedom to move wherever I like but for the first time in my life there isn’t one place pulling me in more than the other.

The truth is I have that home ‘feeling’ in both places, and honestly, I could probably find it somewhere else too.

I’m a wanderer by nature and struggle to ‘settle’ anywhere, even if it’s probably exactly what I need right now.

My eye problems have been a blessing in disguise because the situation has given me more time to evaluate my choices, but also ‘just be’ without the pressure to decide right now.

So, I’m staying put in Cascais for now. As for the next step? It’s a surprise!

I’m really looking forward to beers on the beach with friends, meeting new people, hugs, kisses, standing close to people rather than further away, dancing somewhere other than my apartment and last minute road trips. But until then I’ve promised myself I will try and find joy in what I have right here, right now ❤️🇵🇹

I love my life in Portugal but honestly, luck** doesn’t have anything to do with it.

I didn’t magically appear in Portugal and I wasn’t assigned this lifestyle by a higher authority. I chose both of those things and they haven’t come without changes and sacrifices.

I wasn’t living the life I wanted in the UK so I did whatever I needed to do to change that situation for myself. I quit my full-time job in Cornwall and set up Soi 55 so that I could work from anywhere. When things got tough financially, I started teaching too.

I am in no way pretending to have it all figured out. All I’ve done is follow my intuition (sometimes at my own peril😅). I’ve definitely had my share of struggles along the way but I like to think I have no regrets ❤️

Choosing this path hasn’t always been easy but ultimately it feels like the right thing for me and I’m happier for choosing it.

Here is the best thing.... If you’re not happy with something in your life then you have the power to change it. Whether it is through small, baby steps or one giant leap, if it’s something you really want then you can make it happen ❤️

There will be hard times and low points because big changes don’t come without without a fight, but if you are working towards something that will make you happier then it is worth it 100 times over.

Life is short. Switch jobs. Start the business you’ve always wanted. Move countries. Go back to University. Insert more here.

If Covid is currently squashing those dreams then start smaller. Make a vision board. Ask yourself tough questions. Read books. Take a course. Manifest.

If the last year has taught me anything it’s that there is only one person in control of your destiny and that is you.

**Luck : not to be confused with privilege. I realise that my nationality, race, education etc are part of my privilege. I know that this privilege gives me opportunities that others don’t have. I don’t take these for granted.
