Best 10 day Portugal Itinerary. By a human, not AI.

“What is the best 10 day itinerary for Portugal?” is one of the most common questions I am asked as a travel planner based in Portugal. This number of days is the most common number of days people have to spend on vacation in Portugal; and everyone wants to know what is the best way to spend this time. So here it is, a (long-awaited) itinerary you can use to plan a 10 day trip in Portugal. As a bonus, I’ve built some extra itineraries to choose from – because there isn’t a one size fits all approach to this.

Let’s start here : This itinerary was written by a human, not AI. That human is me. I’m Candy and I’m an independent travel advisor living in Portugal full-time since 2016.

Choosing Portugal as a Vacation Spot

Portugal is the perfect vacation spot in Europe. It is a compact but diverse country boasting varied terrain and unique experiences; there is something for every type of traveler.  From cities to villages, beaches to mountains, untouched nature to ancient history, food traditions, pottery routes, road trips and hiking adventures. Unlike other popular vacation destinations like Spain and Italy, Portugal is manageable in less time. You can get a glimpse of different parts of the country in 10 days and leave feeling well-acquainted

How long to spend in Portugal

So now that you know you can cover a lot of distance in 10 days, it’s a good time to remind you that it doesn’t mean you should.

10 days is a great amount to time to spend on vacation in Portugal. In this time you can get to know a couple of places well and take some side quests to enrich your journey. However, if you want to see the regions in more detail or get to know Portugal beyond the tourist hot spots, then spending longer or visiting multiple times is a good idea. Many of my clients have left Portugal only to return to see more again the following year.

If I could suggest the perfect time to see Portugal? 3 weeks. With this amount of time you can get a varied experience of highlights and hidden gems, while learning about the country in a more meaningful way.

Don’t have 3 weeks? Don’t worry – whatever time you have is welcome in Portugal. Even if you only have 3 days you can get a feel for the spirit of Portugal if you research first, plan your time meaningfully and choose one location to get to know.

How to get around Portugal

There are many, many different variations here. Depending on which locations you are visiting, what your preferences are and what budget you have. I go into this in more detail on my Best Places to Stop Porto <> Lisbon <> Algarve guide.

By Car

If you are following the standard 10 day Portugal itinerary and visiting Lisbon, Porto and Algarve you do not need a car. You definitely don’t need one in Lisbon and Porto but having a car in Algarve gives you a lot more freedom.

Best Car Rental Portugal

By Private Driver

If you have the budget for it, working with a private driver is another option. The luxury of a driver is that you can relax between destinations, pick local knowledge along the way and….drink as much wine as you like at lunch. Two places I definitely recommend using a private driver/ tour guide are Sintra and Douro Valley.

By Train

The train is also very doable for these three places, just bear in mind that Porto to Algarve or vice versa is a full day of travel regardless, and by train it is particularly long. If you don’t mind indulging in a day of slow travel then the train is a solid choice.

Tip: When booking train travel in Portugal always use the official CP website to book tickets. When you book more than 2 weeks in advance you can access special prices.

Like planning your own adventures and want to see everything in one place? Then it’s worth investing in the Portugal Travel Map.

Where to Stay in Portugal

This is an impossible task because it depends on so many factors but know that there is everything from 5 star resorts, boutique hotels, guesthouses and b&b’s to camping and hostel beds. I’ll share a few of my favourites in each of the main destinations. If you want more options, including which areas to stay then check out my Portugal travel guides. I typically use Booking to find accommodation as they have the widest range and usually at the best price (and with free cancellation) but always worth checking GoogleMaps too.

Best 10 day Itinerary Portugal

The idea of a best 10 day itinerary is a bit of a false promise because it depends on many things. The best itinerary for you will be a mix of places that match your travel style and preferences. It could be fast-paced, moving every day with lots of stops, perhaps a road trip. Or it could look like exploring 2 or 3 locations more deeply. It could be linking together the main sites, areas of interest or going off-the-beaten path or surrounding yourself with nature. There is not one 10 day itinerary that fits all. So, in the spirit of personalised travel and itineraries (my speciality) I’ve built several 10 day itinerary versions below. I’ll start with the most famous/popular, the one you can find anywhere you look and probably the same one AI will recommend you and then I’ll move on to some more detailed and thoughtful itineraries created by me as a local travel advisor and Portugal expert.

26 PLACES TO SEE IN PORTUGAL IN 2026

Use this guide to let your imagination flow. You don’t have to follow the same path as everyone else. There is no problem with wanting to see the sites that interest you and if those are the main sights then go for it, but be open to other options too.

Fresh produce, Olhão market, Algarve

Best itinerary Experiences to book in advance

Since this itinerary features the most popular places in Portugal there is no shortage of tour and activity options. Not all are equal. Group tours can be great if you are on a budget but if you have the means to splurge a little more, working with a private guide usually gives you a one of a kind experience. When using GYG make sure you carefully read reviews in advance. I’ve personally worked with/toured with the local companies (not GYG) I’ve mentioned below. Don’t leave this until the last minute. The best experiences do sell out. Most offer a reasonable free cancellation policy.

Best Classic 10 day Portugal Itinerary

The classic itinerary most first time visitors follow. This is no secret or special reveal – you can find this itinerary frame / route everywhere. It doesn’t allow much time to see or experience anywhere in much depth but It’s a great itinerary for ticking off the main sites. This itinerary is the usual route but I’ve added a few extra local spots and suggestions based on my own personal experience of living in both Algarve and Lisbon over the last 10 years. Happy planning!

The 10 day Classic Route

  • Days 1 -3 Lisbon
  • Days 4 -6 Porto
  • Days 7-10 Algarve

Day 1 : Arrive Lisbon

Start by getting lost in the neighborhoods of Alfama, Graça and Mouraria. Worth stopping at Portas do Sol and the Graça miradouro. I recommend O Corvo or Eurico Velho for lunch (book in advance)

For nightlife, start at Java Rooftop in Cais do Sodré and then head to Bairro Alto. Try to grab a seat at Tasca do Chico Fado or book a fado food tour with Devour

Day 2 : Morning: Get to know the city bite by bite and book a food tour with Culinary Backstreets or conduct your own tasting tour; the Campo Ourique market is worth a look.

Afternoon : History buffs head to Belem monuments.  Art lovers head to LX Factory and MAAT. Active travelers rent bikes and cycle to Belém from Lisbon (cycle path the whole way). Obligatory pastel de nata at Belém de Pasteís but if you can’t be bothered to queue, Manteigaria is just as good without the crowds.

Evening: Train to Cascais for beachside drinks and dinner. Arrive before 5pm to climb the lighthouse and see the best viewpoint – Santa Marta. Highly recommend dinner alfresco on ‘rua amarela’.

Day 3 : Sintra day trip with a tour guide. Pick two palaces, no more. Option to visit the coast for seafood lunch. I don’t recommend trying to fit Cascais at the same time. Or spend the day exploring different neighborhoods in Lisbon.

  • São Bento
  • Santos
  • Chiado
  • Bairro Alto
  • Príncipe Real.

Day 4 :  Lisbon >> Porto with train, rental car or private driver

BEST PLACES TO VISIT BETWEEN PORTO <> LISBON <> ALGARVE

Afternoon/ Evening Ribeira district with six bridges, boat ride or cocktails at Porto Cruz rooftop followed by sunset at Jardim do Morro.

Day 5 : Porto main historical sights and port tasting. Rent bikes and cycle to Foz do Douro or take the metro or taxi to Matosinhos. Do a sardine tour and eat fresh grilled fish lunch. For something different book a sidecar tour around the city and see Porto from a different perspective.

Day 6 : Douro Valley full day tour. Visit a mix of wineries, not only the well known ones. Also book an olive oil tasting and stop at the traditional village of Provesende. This is best with a private guide.

BEST WINE TASTING EXPERIENCES DOURO VALLEY

For your last night enjoy an intimate meal at tiny Porta 4 restaurant (book in advance)

Day 7 : Travel Day Porto >> Lagos, Algarve. (About 6-7 hours without stops). Optional stop in Coimbra (university city), Évora (small historical city) or Vila nova de Milfontes (coastal town).

BEST ROAD TRIPS PORTUGAL

Day 8 : Lagos beaches, arrive at Ponta de Piedade for sunrise glimpse, Lagos fish market, historical centre and afternoon kayaking or bathing on golden sands of Meia Praia.

Day 9 : Embark on a west Coast adventure (with rental car) with lunch in Sagres or in Monte Clérigo. Loop back to Monchique for sunset and dinner at Luar da Foia.

ALGARVE OFF-THE-BEATEN-PATH

Or go East for seven hanging valleys coastal hike, fresh octopus at Santa Luzia and afternoon strolling pretty Tavira. A private driver or rental car is best but you can also use the train for this eastern area if you are prepared for some slow travel.

ALGARVE BY TRAIN

Day 10 : Travel back to Lisbon. If your flight is not until evening and you have a rental car or private driver, stop at Arrábida national park.

depart Lisbon.

Tip: If you have a morning flight, stay in Lisbon the night before. Or see alternatives below.

Classic 10 day Itinerary Considerations :

The itinerary above is based on the popular option to fly in and out of Lisbon which is the best connected airport in Portugal. However, this also means you need to bounce back and forth Lisbon.

Alternative order 10 day classic Itinerary : Porto first, Lisbon Last (or vice versa)

If Lisbon is your only airport option then consider taking a train or private driver straight to Porto and then heading to Algarve before ending your trip in Lisbon.

  • Day 1 – 3 : Porto
  • Day 4 : Full Travel day (Porto >> Algarve)
  • Day 5 – 7 : Algarve
  • Day 8 – 10 :  Lisbon

One Way Classic 10 Day Itinerary

If you have the option to fly in/out of different Airports then this is worth doing to avoid doubling back on yourself. I recommend flying into Porto and then out of Faro (Algarve) or fly out of Lisbon if Faro is not possible.

  • Day 1 – 3 : Porto
  • Day 4 – 6 : Lisbon
  • Day 7 – 10 : Algarve

Human Travel Planning. No AI here.

What you see & read here is REAL. I don’t use ChatGP or other AI to write my travel guides or design itineraries. Travel is a human experience that requires all of the senses. It is impossible for AI to replicate that. Working with a human travel planner means working with someone who understands that travel is a highly unique and personal experience, not a ‘copy and paste’ job. All travel guides have been written by me from my own personal experiences. All the photos on this website are taken myself during my own travel. Nothing has been created using AI so you can trust what you are seeing actually exists.
